VERONICA

After the shower and nap, I woke up feeling refreshed. I found a black tank dress in Sibby’s closet and decided that the traveling witch wouldn’t mind if I borrowed it. The cut was higher at the hemline and tighter around the hips and chest than I was used to, but the fabric was nice and cool. Combined with the early evening mountain breeze, I decided to forgo the lumpy ice packs.

I exited the bedroom, expecting to see Tyler on the couch or maybe in the dining room. He’d been freaked out by the dragon and hadn’t bothered to hide his unease. That only made me like him more.

I stepped out into the greenhouse, wondering if his curiosity had gotten the best of him. The Silver sisters' magical sanctuary was the stuff of legends. Plants and ancient spell books somehow managed to coexist in the same space though the humidity should have made that impossible. He wasn’t in the greenhouse, though I heard a rhythmic thudding sound coming from outside.

Exiting through the side door, I followed the noise to the forest’s edge and stopped dead.

Tyler stood there, his shirt off. Sweat gleamed on his back as he raised the ax over a log and brought it down with tremendous force. The early evening sunlight gilded his every bulging muscle as he worked.

Desire pooled low in my belly. I watched transfixed as he split log after log. Though he looked scrumptious in jeans and made my heart pound when he wore his uniform, seeing him half-naked and sweaty was a next-level seduction. What was it about a rugged man doing that sort of manual labor that drew a woman like a moth to a lit match? And like the moth, I was about to go up in flames.

Chaos had pulled me into his life. And for the first time since discovering I was pregnant, I believed it was for the right reasons.

He’d said Emma’s name one time. One mistake made when he was drunk, hard up, and heartsore. I couldn’t hold it against him any longer. Not after everything he’d confessed earlier about how she didn’t want him. He’d been imagining her for years. Was it any wonder that he’d slipped when he’d been under the influence?

And like I told him, what was in a name? He didn’t even know my real one.

I had to give him credit for dealing with my chaos with steadfastness and grace. I was tired of refusing his advances. Tired of saying no. Tired of running.

What would it be like to truly embrace the chaos? To say yes?

Tyler paused, setting the ax aside so he could pick up a water bottle. I watched as he tipped it up to his lips, mouth working as he took greedy pulls of the liquid. My own lips parted as he turned and caught sight of me. Maybe it was my imagination, but his smile seemed forced.

“Feeling better?” He asked as he moved toward me. In that moment he seemed less like the friendly Golden Retriever and more like a stalking predator.
